最初の記事は「50年前の日本は『放射線まみれ』だった」。スリーマイル島やチェルノブイリ原発事故が起こるはるか前、1945年にアメリカが初の大気圏核実験して以降、今日までに世界中で2000回以上の核実験が行われている。なかでも、62年には年間178回の核実験が行われ、世界中に「死の灰」がまき散らされた。その当時のほうが、いまとは比較にならない放射線量があったと、「日本分析センター」というところの協力を得て、63年から今年までのセシウム137の測定値を表にしている。

63年の秋田は3・36ミリシーベルト/年、東京も1・69ミリシーベルト/年だが、その後減り続け、86年のチェルノブイリの時にやや上がるが、00年にはほとんど検出されなくなったと表にある。福島原発事故が起きて、茨城の5・41ミリシーベルト/年という数値が突出して高いが、福島市は 0・84ミリシーベルト/年である。

ポストはこう結論づける。このデータから、いまよりずっと高い放射線量を浴び続けてきても、その後の日本人のがんの発症率への影響は見られない。さらに広島・長崎の原爆経験者の妊娠例を調査しても、被爆の影響による子供の先天性異常がなかったことは確実である。
